Our story started with a rego check and a life-changing conversation. After completing my mechanical apprenticeship, I spent 17 years working across NSW with the Railways, maintaining everything from cars to heavy vehicles. When I was retrenched, I returned to Newcastle looking for a new start.

One day, while waiting for a rego check at my local mechanic, I mentioned I was looking for work. Half an hour later, that same mechanic knocked on my door—not with a job offer, but an opportunity. He said I could work for him, but there was a catch: I’d need to buy the business.

It was a big decision. My wife and I had young kids at the time, and taking over a business was a huge leap. But we took the chance, and I worked alongside Ken for three years before officially purchasing the workshop in March 2000. We’ve been proudly serving the Shortland community ever since.

More than 37 years on, I still love turning a wrench and chatting with customers. Helping young mechanics grow in their careers has been a personal highlight—and having my son Jack step in as Manager has taken K & M Mechanical into an exciting new chapter. Family values and community service continue to drive everything we do.
